REBECCA ROBERSTON MADDEN (on the left) was my Grandfather JOSHUA MADDEN'S Mother. She was born 20 September, 1827 in Orbisinia, Fulton County, Pennsylvania and died 20, January 1908 in Platte Township, Union County, Iowa. In 1844 she married ABRAM MADDEN and they were the parents of 12 children -- 10 growing to adulthood. MARY (KITTY) MADDEN SALING / SALINGS (on the right), the third child and my Grandfather Johsua's sister, was born 15 December, 1848 in Huntington County, Pennsylvania, married JAMES SALING / SALINGS on 10 December, 1869, and died 1 April, 1918. They had four children ELVA SALING / SALINGS STRICKLAND (above) being one of their daughters. ELVA was born 11 April, 1875 at Kent, Iowa, was married to GEORGE STRICKLAND in 1898, and died 19 May, 1914 leaving four young children. The little girl in the white dress is MARY STRICKLAND, one of those children, who was born in 1899.

This is a very special picture for me because not only does it have Grandma Madden in it but also Aunt Kitty, her daughter, and granddaughter. MARY STRICKLAND married GEORGE ENGEL in 1919 and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1969. We have kept in close touch with three of ELVA'S family, MARY, CARL and THELMA.
