This is Caleb Agnew's son John, my grandfather and it's one of my favorite Agnew photos. With his own son as a subject Caleb could really indulge his love of posing children with props. Here we are treated to a very clever visual joke in the form of a young child playing the philosopher. There are several details in this photo that make it particularly interesting. Note the impish grin on young John's face for example, making it appear as if he's truly "in on the joke." Note also that our young Aristotle is so short of stature that he requires a stepstool just to get into his reading chair. Finally, if you enlarge the photo, you'll see that the newspaper he's reading is in Greek, suggesting that it's really ALL Greek to him! * * * * * Click on the photo to ENLARGE. |
