This photo was given to me by a cousin from her family collection. I believe it may be a photo of children in the Bradley family of Creston, Iowa, who are related to me by marriage. Like many of the Agnew photos in my personal collection, this one is pretty beat up. However, for me that doesn't diminish its charm because I can still see many of Caleb's touches here... from the expressive faces and poses of the children to the fine, period furniture used in the pose. I especially like the dreamy pose of the little girl in front, even though it doesn't seem to be a very natural one for a child of that age. If you enlarge this photo you can see that it says: C.D. Agnew Art Studio at the bottom. This is the trade name Caleb used in the early days of the studio, and it helps date the photo to the 1890s. It also indicates that Caleb viewed himself as more of an artist than a tradesman or small businessman. He eventually changed the name to "C.D. Agnew's Studio" and then simply to the "Agnew Studio" Click on ANY photo to ENLARGE. |
